How long does Sun protection / SPF lotion keep?

This time last year, I purchased some SPF 30 sun lotion for my holiday. I still have lots left in the bottle. Will it be safe to use it for my holiday in July or will it have lost it's effectiveness?
I find it wears out every year. I used some from last summer a few weeks ago and found it lost it's effectiveness- give it a try but if you fry toss it and purchase some more -
Generally replace it every year – if you are in doubt buy a small bottle before you go – and you know it is fairly fresh.
