What kind of sun protection should my family and I be using? What factor?
We are africans, I have a milk chocolate complexion, my husband has a caramel complexion, and both my children (2.5 years and 9 months) are light-skinned (the colour of milky tea lol)
I bought baby sun cream with a factor of 50 – i think it might be a bit excessive for us but I am not really sure, I grew up not using any sun cream but increasingly I am hearing that black people need to use it too. Like i said, the one i bought is for babies, but i cant be bothered buying a separate one for hubby and myself.
What you bought is just fine. The fact that it’s for babies just means it’s safe to use on sensitive skin for grown-ups too. Just slather it generously on your exposed skin every day, and put a hat on the little ones if they’ll wear one. Everyone should use sunscreen, regardless of the tint of their skin.
Great job for being a good mom!

i always stick with sun factor 30 for the kids no lower! i sometimes use a 25 oil and i still burn, so 30 might be good for the whole family.

Wear the highest factor avaiable.
Factor 50 is not excessive if it helps prevents skin cancer.

NURSE, severeal cancerous lesions removed due to not using sun protection.
ALL children need a factor 50….no matter what their skin colour….& what do you mean you can’t be bothered for you & hubby?? – don’t understand that way of thinking….BUT – i start my holidays with a 25 factor…then drop to a 20 factor after the 1st week.
my skin is very important…i always come back with a tan…but i am not all fried & wrinkled like some people are. i am blonde & white skinned & that suits me…you should really take care in the sun.

The sun can burn anyone and it is the ultraviolet rays that you need to be careful with. The sunscreen you bought is good for the whole family. I have red haired fair skin children and I use an spf of 60. So far the only porduct that caries an spf that high is Hawiian Tropic. Experts say that 35 is high enough but a little extra protection never hurt anyone.

Personal Experience
50 is probably a little excessive for you but it won’t do you any harm to use it. I am very fair skinned and freckly so I use a factor 50 or I burn. You could probably get away with under a 20 and not get skin damage.
The only thing you might find with the one you have purchased for your children is it leaves a milky residue on the skin so parents can see if it needs reapplying. This can look a little wierd on me so on your darker skin it would be very noticeable. Try a bit first on your arm or something to check. Not all of them do this but a lot do!

Everyone should wear sun screen, even if you have a dark complexion. Everyone gets sunburn. SPF 50 is perfect for a baby, and even for your toddler. As for your husband and yourself, I would go with SPF 20 or 15.
