How many times does a person have to tan until they get skin cancer?

Posted by admin

I bought a package of 10 tans for prom, and I'm afraid of getting skin cancer. I don't really burn, but I know how bad tanning is. After I finish my package, I plan on never going back again. But i was wondering how many times a person has to tan until they get skin cancer.

I've tanned many times and have never had any skin problems at all. It's the burning that can create a problem years down the road. My sister is almost 50 and still goes to the tanning bed every spring and tanning on the beach every summer and has no skin problems. If you're prone to skin cancer, you may get skin cancer. If you're not, you won't.

There is no simple answer; it's the accumulated exposure, not times.
You'd have to calculate total exposure time & multiply by strength.
Anyway, it will also vary by skin tone & DNA.

If you are unlucky, just once.

Think about the number of times you have had sun exposure, that also counts!

Also think of your age. Here in Australia they are trying to bring in laws banning under 18's from tanning salons and all tanning salons must carry warnings.

Tanning represents skin damage, pure and simple. It may look nice, but it represents skin damage. It is not "just the burn that hurts you". Damage to the DNA can trigger both local and distant changes, that may take years or decades to manifest themselves. While many can tan without any apparent problems, this does not mean it is safe. After all, many people survive car crashes too, but they are not considered safe. There is not a "safe" amount of tanning, since we do not understand individual susceptibility to UV exposure.
Tanning beds can be particularly problematic because of the intensity of exposure, and due to the fact that many usually unexposed areas get exposed in a booth.
You will do what you want, but my advice: get a spray tan.

    Blessings

Tanning is risky behavior! Let smoking, being overweight, eating fried foods, etc. you are increasing your chances of cancer. Tanning more than once a month increases chances of skin cancer by 55% (see link below).

Enjoy a long life, laugh some, love some, and avoid adding to the risks of ending your life to early…
