Does wearing a cap give as much protection from the sun as applying sunscreen?

wearing caps basically only protect your scalp. so you will still need sunscreen. and it's not about color as much as it is the fabric…if you wear one of those straw hats with all those holes in it, you aren't doing your scalp much good. but if you were a fedora for example with a 3" rim around it then you are protecting your scalp a lot better and also a little bit of your face

If you mean Baseball cap, then it doesn't matter about the colour, it will provide the same protection regardless. A cap protects you from the sun by creating shade on your face. If you sit still and don't move, your face will be fine, but your neck will suffer without sun screen. If you intend to move about, you should apply sunscreen to your face also…
