Obroni koko – Albinism in Ghana
“Obroni koko” is an expression in twi, a local language widely spoken in Ghana, that literally translates to “white person white”. It’s used by many Ghanaians to designate Caucasian people, but also Africans with albinism.
Albinism is a genetic, hereditary disorder characterized by a lack of pigmentation in the hair, skin and eyes. The pigment that gives skin its color, called melanin, is also a key element in the development of the eye. Its absence usually results in poor eyesight – most people with albinism are short-sighted. Children who look “strange”, already disadvantaged by poor eyesight, are sometimes asked to sit in the back by ill-informed teachers.
Left without its natural protection from the sun, the skin burns easily and is more susceptible to develop cancer. Under the African sun, many will develop skin cancer before the age of 20. Without proper education, especially in rural areas, people lack the basic knowledge on how to protect themselves. Sunscreen is expensive and generally unavailable, out of reach for all but a few.
But in Africa, what can be even more difficult is simply to look different.
The unusual appearance of people with albinism is often the source of embarrassing remarks, mockeries, and urban legends.

This is such a good documentary.Its so short yet it manages to pull us into their world and understand their troubles. I don’t understand why society would reject these people. I mean, if they were deformed or something I could try to understand, you know they may look scary, disfigured etc (not that I am agreeing with rejecting those kind of people) but albinos just look like white people with African features.
I feel bad that they are made to feel this way. My heart goes out to them.

@maudy2009 I appreciate your sentiments are heart felt, but not every albino is treated like an outcast.There are countries where they are targetted but that’s in the minority. Also they are black/Africans and therefore being white skinned isn’t going to make them more acceptable in Europe (in general), especially, as immigrants and African immigrants in particular are still not made to feel welcome in Europe.

I ve got pain in my heart when i see all this… Maybe it would be better if those albinos come to Europe and start here a new life! The will always be accepted by the European ppl, i know that for sure. There are so many mixed ppl here in Europe. The Albinos will NOT be different than other ppl here! @map0915 Mesopotamia is the Cradle of Civilisation (wikipedia. Cradle_of_civilization) for the exact reason you said, it’s climate was well suited to farming so humans could move beyond subsistence. I have never heard it referred to as the cradle of life. The first modern humans were from Ethiopia.

@EquusFerrarius Well I’ve found out that every time I look up the Cradle of life(for Humans), (and after searching past the Lara Croft Movie(Cradle of Laugh)) The Mesopotamia keeps popping up. Because of the unique climate and because of the fertile land. Because of the Euphrates and Tigris. However the first Humanoid was found in North-South Africa, dubbed cradle of Humankind.

@map0915 They would probably have looked like native South African’s, Khoisan or Sandawe. These people are considered to be the worlds oldest ethnic group. They originally lived in East Africa where the oldest human remains have been found, but migrated south in response to climate change. Mesopotamia is the Cradle of Civilisation, East Africa is the Cradle of Humanity. The Cradle of Life is the ocean.

@TheKingShakaZulu We are not albinos. Albino is total lack we actually do have pigment. Also Albinos would still have black children because of dormant black pigment genes. There has been Albino white children however. We call them gingers……
