How long does a bottle of sun protection last before it becomes 'unprotective'?
Posted by admin
I want to purchase some sun protection creams as they are on off but I am not going on holiday until January – will they still protect from the sun to the SPV shown on the bottle, or will they have gone 'out of date'? or will they just be less protective? or will they be fine?
It really depend on how active you get with it on. they say that after 80 min. or and hour that you should reapply especially if you are sweating very bad and or swimming. So I am not really sure how long a whole bottle would last you but, this is the only answer I can give you. The whole bottle may last you longer if you store it out of the heat and in not to cool of an area.

Some sunscreens do not contain preservatives and therefore will expire more quickly. The two safe ways to determine if your sunscreen is still effective are:
(1) see if there is understandable date of expiration on the product. If not,
(2) Contact the manufacturer and give them the code on the product and let them tell you the expiration date.
Some sunscreens, when they expire, not only not protect you in the sun very well but become rancid (smelly and gross). You may want to attempt to return to the store you bought it from or contact the manufacturer directly and ask them to replace it. Many companies will replace because they want to keep their customers happy.
The most important thing about sunscreens is their active ingredients. Number one effective ingredient is a high percentage of zinc oxide (10% to 25%) followed (but not closely) by titanium dioxide.
Buy good sunscreens because they really work more effectively to block both UVB and UVA. Both important to
reduce your risk of getting skin cancer. You should use roughly a shot-glass of sunscreen per application and re-apply at least every two hours (sooner if you swim or towel-off).

They should be okay if you don't open them until you need to.

they should last about a year, but check the date, cause they could have been on the store shelf siince last summer.

I have read they last about 6 months, they may still be effective in January. I don't think they should be used next year at this time (but that is just what I read somewhere so I don't know how true that is or if it's just a selling point)

An unopened bottle of sunscreen has a shelf-life of 5 years. Opened it should last you for about 2. It never "stops" working, it just won't be as protective and you may want to consider re-applying more often.
