Hi, I’m Melissa Atieh and I’m a CVS pharmacist. There are many things you should do to protect your skin when you’re outside on a sunny day.
You should always wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor, or SPF, of at least 15 or 30 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Be sure to check the expiration date and don’t use sunscreens that don’t have an expiration date for longer than three years. Make sure you apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside. Slather it on generously and make sure to reapply it at least every two hours – sunscreen does not last all day. Don’t forget about your lips, either. Wear a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15. Try to get some shade periodically. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face. Cover up with lightweight long-sleeve shirts and pants. Wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet radiation and protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
Remember, even the occasional overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can increase the risk of skin cancer – so even one sunburn a year can be very dangerous. That’s why it’s so important to be protected all the time. Despite the appearance, all tans are a form of skin damage. Children under six months should not wear sunscreen because of the chemicals used in the lotions. For protection, keep your baby in the shade and use protective clothing and hats. On the other hand, although the sun can be dangerous, you shouldn’t avoid it entirely. Daily sunlight without protection before 10 a.m. or late in the afternoon is important for proper absorption of vitamin D.
I hope you use these tips to stay safe in the sun. If you have any questions, talk to your CVS pharmacist. We’re happy to help.
